Liverpool are chasing deals for goalkeeper Shay Given and defender Tiago Ilori ahead of Monday's transfer deadline.

Manager Brendan Rodgers is interested in bringing in Aston Villa keeper Given, 37, as cover for first choice Simon Mignolet, sources said.

It is understood that Given, who was linked with Championship side Doncaster earlier this summer, has been told that he can leave Villa Park.

Given did not travel with Villa on their pre-season tour of Germany, with boss Paul Lambert instead opting to take Brad Guzan and Jed Steer as his two keepers.

Rodgers is keen to have an experienced back-up for Mignolet after allowing Pepe Reina to leave for Napoli on a season's loan.

And the manager is hoping to complete a deal for Given before the transfer window shuts at 11pm on Monday.

Rodgers is looking at strengthening in defence too, and remains optimistic about the chances of signing centre-back Ilori, 20, from Sporting Lisbon.

Talks over a deal broke down in June as Liverpool and Sporting could not agree a fee, but a move could go through over the next few days.

Liverpool are hopeful that they can sign Ilori for around £6 million.

The club are also interested in Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Mamadou Sakho, who they could yet sign before Monday's transfer deadline.

Sakho, 23, is understood to be a target for Roma as well.
