Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany may sit out the derby clash against Manchester United after reports emerged he could be out injured until October.

Kompany picked up a groin problem in City's 4-0 win over Newcastle in their opening Premier League fixture, and fears have grown that he will be out of the meeting with United on September 22.

A return date of October may be likely, leaving City manager Manuel Pellegrini without his captain for the crunch clash, and with problems in defence.

New signing Martin Demichelis is set to miss the next six weeks after suffering damaged knee ligaments. Despite Matija Nastasic being available again to ease the worries of Pellegrini, he requires time to regain full fitness, as does Micah Richards, who is targeting a return to action against Stoke next weekend.
