Kyle Walker apologises for inhaling hippy crack

England and Spurs defender Kyle Walker issued an apology on Sunday evening after a picture emerged that appeared to show him breathing legal but potentially lethal nitrous oxide - known as hippy crack - through a balloon.

The photograph was taken on a night out in Sheffield in June and according to the Mail on Sunday the balloon he was inhaling from contained nitrous oxide, a legal substance known as laughing gas.

Walker took to Twitter to try to handle the situation. "Apologies for not commenting sooner on a story about me," he wrote. "I've been training and am focussed on Tuesday's game for England. Now I know the health risks, it was poor judgement on my part.

"I won't be doing this again and hope that no one else is influenced into putting their health at risk by my actions."

Unconsciousness or death from lack of oxygen can occur when using nitrous oxide, which is used as a pain killer.

The FA insisted that Walker had not broken any laws or behaved in a way that affects his standing with the England team.

England manager Roy Hodgson confirmed Walker will start against Ukraine on Tuesday.
