Moyes warns Young over diving

David Moyes has called on the FA to take retrospective action against divers in a bid to stamp simulation out of football.

The Manchester United manager criticised his winger Ashley Young, who was booked for diving in Saturday's 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, and praised referee Jonathan Moss for cautioning him.

But while he does not believe Young should face any further action, he believes it would benefit officials if video evidence was used to sanction divers who had escaped unpunished at the time.

He said: "I've said for many years we should have retrospective action for diving. That would help referees no end."

Moyes has told Young he wants him to stop going to ground too easily but admits it is impossible to say with absolute certainty that the England international won't dive in the future.

He added: "I can never be sure it won't happen again. I have had a word with him privately."

United centre-back Rio Ferdinand agreed with his manager but believes it is up to Uefa, Fifa and other domestic leagues to take a tough stance on diving as well.

He said: "Retrospective viewing and punishments may be the way to go. It's got to happen across the board, not just in our league. You go into the Champions League and you get players from other countries you simulate. As a defender, you don't want people trying to con the referee."
