Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany said he feels he is in "perfect condition" ahead of Sunday's derby meeting with Manchester United.

Kompany made his return to action in the 3-0 victory over Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League on Tuesday night, having been sidelined with a groin injury since the 4-0 win against Newcastle on the opening day, and believes he has fully recovered.

"I was probably more happy than anyone else to be on the pitch," Kompany said. "It feels great. I am really happy to be back with the guys and I work hard every single day to make sure I can play as many games as possible.

"I am also very thankful to the medical staff that gave me such good attention and allowed me to come back in perfect condition. I felt in incredible form when I left the team and I have come back feeling in the same form and that is the most important."

The 27-year-old's return is timely, with the Manchester derby approaching and fellow defenders Martin Demichelis, Micah Richards and Gael Clichy all suffering fitness problems.

Kompany - whose goal gave City a 1-0 win over United towards the end of their triumphant 2011-12 campaign - is relishing the visit of David Moyes' men.

"We will make sure we are in the right condition for the game," he said. "It is a special game. It is becoming one of the most sought-after fixtures in the world and it is always great to be involved in such games. I never take them for granted."

Clichy - who has missed City's last three games with a thigh injury - is likely to miss the derby, with Aleksandar Kolarov set to continue in the left-back position, while Richards faces a late fitness test.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini is more optimistic David Silva will recover from his thigh problem to play against the champions, however.

He told a press conference after the victory in Plzen: "David Silva could play in the derby, from the reports I have had, but we will see when we get back to Manchester. I think it is more difficult for Clichy to play, but we are still trying."

Silva has missed both matches since he was hurt on international duty with Spain and, if he is not available, either Samir Nasri or James Milner is likely to play on the left.
