Paris Saint-Germain captain Thiago Silva has urged Wayne Rooney to quit Manchester United for the French champions, according to the Sunday Mirror.

Ahead of PSG's clash with Monaco, the Brazil international said he was 'hopeful' that Rooney could have been persuaded to join PSG last summer but insisted the Paris club should return for the 27-year-old if doubts remained over his United future.

Rooney was the target of a transfer campaign from Chelsea last transfer window but remained at the club after United rejected their Premier League rivals' advances.

"I was hopeful we would sign Wayne Rooney this summer and I am hopeful that we still can," said Silva, as reported by the Sunday Mirror.

"It is clear his future at Manchester United is not certain. The player himself has made it clear that he would like a new challenge.

"If he still feels that way in January or even next summer then, once again I would urge him to come and join PSG. We are the most exciting project in European football and it is clear from the ambition of our owners that we are going to be successful."
