Robin van Persie will look to lift Manchester United's spirits after their derby humiliation

Robin van Persie could be fit to return for Manchester United's Capital One Cup tie against Liverpool on Wednesday.

Van Persie sat out United's 4-1 derby defeat to Manchester City with a groin injury as he missed a Premier League game for the first time in two-and-a-half years.

But manager David Moyes is optimistic his top scorer will be available soon and believes he could face Liverpool or at least return for Saturday's Premier League fixture against West Bromwich Albion.

Moyes told Sky Sports: "We thought Robin would be okay. We gave him every chance. It's nothing serious. He could be involved on Wednesday or next weekend."

Moyes added in his post-match press conference: "I don't think it is going to be long. He just felt something in his groin in training. We didn't want to aggravate it."

Danny Welbeck deputised for Van Persie at the Etihad Stadium and Moyes said: "Obviously you miss Robin van Persie. He is a huge miss to anyone but we have got a strong squad."

Captain Nemanja Vidic branded the defeat "horrible" and is adamant United have to bounce back against Liverpool.

He told Sky: "It is horrible to lose the derby game. It's more difficult when you lose the game in this kind of performance. We were 4-0 down and it was tough. It is disappointing but we have to come back. From tomorrow, we start to be positive and try and win the next game and move on."
