The Istanbul derby between Galatasaray and Besiktas was abandoned in the 93rd minute after hundreds of fans clashed on the pitch at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday.

Supporters broke ranks and entered the pitch after Gala midfielder Felipe Melo was sent off during injury time. Galatasary were leading 2-1 at the time thanks to a double from former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba.

Turkish media reported that police used teargas in an attempt to restrain fans who had ran onto the pitch, while it was also reported the riots started after tensions rose between Besiktas supporters and riot police in the stadium.

In the event of a pitch invasion, Turkish Football Federation (TFF) regulations state that a match will be postponed before the a disciplinary committee decide on the outcome.

It was the first Istanbul derby of the season and followed months of civil unrest in the city.
