Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel is set to miss the remainder of the season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament.

Van Ginkel lasted only ten minutes of Chelsea's 2-0 Capital One Cup victory over Swindon Town before sustaining the injury and afterwards assistant first-team coach Steve Holland said: "It doesn't look good."

His agent, Rob Jansen, told the Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau on Wednesday that, following an MRI scan, the 20-year-old is set to undergo surgery and won't feature again in the current campaign as he is set to be sidelined for around nine months.

Van Ginkel, who signed for Chelsea this summer from Vitesse Arnhem, has been capped twice for Netherlands and now looks unlikely to feature at next summer's World Cup.
