Terry in line for new Chelsea deal

Chelsea captain John Terry will earn a new Stamford Bridge contract if he maintains his current level of form, manager Jose Mourinho has said.

Former England skipper Terry, 32, was in and out of the team under interim manager Rafael Benitez last season - but he has played the full 90 minutes in every league game so far this time.

Mourinho has been impressed by Terry, who scored his side's equaliser in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Tottenham, and said: "He is a very good player, and very good players have no problems with their contracts.

"I think he always has a future the way he is playing - he has a future in here, or wherever he wants to have a future.

"I have always told him from day one, don't speak [publicly] about signing a new contract, just speak about working very hard from a physical point of view so you don't have the same kind of problems you have had in the past two years, and then you play regularly."

Mourinho added that "I think the fact that he knows that I like him has been important", saying he trusted Terry.

"In his head, he knows that if I leave him out I am trying to do the best thing for him and the best thing for the team, so he is not under this pressure he was in other years," he explained.

"Physically, we are working very well with him. I think he is in good condition and he is a brilliant boy."

Terry thanked Chelsea fans for their support after the game, which saw the Blues recover from a difficult first half to dominate large parts of the second and secure a point despite the dismissal of Fernando Torres - who could now face a four-game ban.

"I took a bit of stick here over the last few years, so that's for the fans who have supported me over the years," he told Chelsea TV.
