Old Trafford hero set for new deal at West Brom

Saido Berahino has confirmed he is in negotiations over a new contract with West Bromwich Albion and expects to remain at The Hawthorns.

The 20-year-old's dream start to the season reached a new peak at the weekend with the winning goal against Manchester United, which cliched the club's first win at Old Trafford for 35 years.

His first Premier League goal has intensified the focus on the long-term future of the graduate of the club's academy system, who has nine months remaining on his existing contract, which is worth an estimated £850-a-week.

Albion are determined to protect their prized asset and offer him a new deal which could see his salary increase to 20 times that figure and Berahino is ready to commit himself to the club that has given him his big break in the game.

"We are talking. It is between me and the club to sort it out and soon something will be done," he said.

"We've just got to wait. I have been here since I was 11. It feels like all my life. It's a great club and they have brought me on and educated me well, so why not stay?"

The youngster, born in Burundi - scored a hat-trick on his full debut against Newport County in the Capital One Cup in August, scored again in the next round against Arsenal and was on target twice in two games for England Under-21s.

He has been given his chance this season by head coach Steve Clarke, who believes that striker has a huge future in the game.

"I'm not surprised by his progress but I am delighted. I saw the signs last summer of how good he can be," Clarke said.

"We sent him out on loan, he got injured and had a difficult time coming back, but he came into the squad and he's been impressive.

"My job now is to manage him and keep his feet on the ground but he has a big future in the game if he keeps doing what he's doing."
