League 1 leaders Leyton Orient were given a shock when Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud turned up at the club asking for a trial.

However, Giroud is not thinking about leaving Arsenal for a fresh challenge down at Brisbane Road - the striker was simply asking for a friend.

Writing in the Independent, Orient communications manager Jonny Davies revealed how Giroud had chosen the club, who have started the season with eight straight victories, because he knew some of their French players from back home.

"We had an unexpected visitor at the club last week when Tom, our commercial manager, got a phone call from Lottie on reception, saying: 'There's a guy down here who says he plays for Arsenal with his friend'," Davies wrote.

"Tom popped down and found himself talking to Olivier Giroud, the Arsenal forward. It transpired he had a friend with him who played professionally in France but had moved to London and Giroud was asking about the possibility of getting him a trial with us.

"Monsieur Giroud was by all accounts very pleasant and mentioned that he knew some of our French players from his days at home."

It is not known whether Giroud's friend was successful or not.
