Chelsea sweat on Torres injury

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres is set to undergo scans on Wednesday to determine the extent of a knee injury suffered in his side's Champions League victory over Steaua Bucuresti.

News that Torres had seen a four-match Premier League ban rescinded on Tuesday was tempered by the injury, which occurred just 36 seconds into the match in Romania.

The Spain international was forced off and it is believed he has hurt his knee ligaments, though boss Jose Mourinho believes it will not be as serious as the injury to Marco van Ginkel, who will miss the rest of the season after sustaining cruciate ligament damage against Swindon in the League Cup last week.

"The doctor is very confident it is not a big injury like we had with Van Ginkel, but it's something with his knee, his ligaments, and we have to wait for the scans," Mourinho said.

"He knows that he doesn't play against Norwich. He knows he cannot go to the national team. He knows that he has 15 days until the next match he can play, against Cardiff. Let's see the scan.

"If the injury is for 15 days I think he'll be fine, because he can't play against Norwich and that's enough time to recover and be fine. The problem is if it's more time. It's a pity for the guy because physically he was in a very good moment."

Chelsea went on to beat Steaua Bucuresti 4-0 to get their Champions League campaign up and running following the opening day defeat to Basel. The Swiss side lost 1-0 at home to Schalke on Tuesday.
