Manchester United manager David Moyes expects Wayne Rooney to return to action this weekend against Sunderland despite sitting out the 1-1 draw with Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

Rooney was a surprise exclusion from the United team, but Danny Welbeck's goal helped secure a point that keeps United joint top of Group A alongside their Ukrainian opponents. Ironically, it was Welbeck who contributed to Rooney's absence.

Asked if Rooney would return against Sunderland, Moyes told Sky Sports: "I think so. It's not that serious, he just took it in a clash with Danny Welbeck [in training] and it's swollen up."

Moyes also reserved praise for Ryan Giggs, who made a record 145th appearance in the competition, moving him out of a tie with Raul. However, Moyes was apologetic about the nature of Giggs' role in Donetsk.

"I had a joke with him before the game about him having to do it [make his appearance] off the bench but that I would be bringing him on," said Moyes. "What a record, what a player."
