Rooney returns to Manchester United side

Wayne Rooney has recovered from the shin injury that ruled him out of Manchester United's Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk in midweek and will start against Sunderland.

There is also a first start for Adnan Januzaj, but summer recruit Marouane Fellaini is not in the squad. United are looking to avoid losing three Premier League games in a row for the first time since 2001.

The last time Sunderland beat United in the Premier League was March 1997, and United have won on six of their seven previous visits to the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland: Westwood, Celustka, Colback, O'Shea, Roberge, Cattermole, Ki, Gardner, Johnson, Giaccherini, Altidore.

Substitutes: Cabral, Mannone, Larsson, Wickham, Cuellar, Dong-won, Borini, Mannone.

Manchester United: De Gea, Rafael, Evra, Vidic, Jones, Carrick, Cleverley, Januzaj, Nani, Rooney, Van Persie.

Substitutes: Lindegaard, Giggs, Smalling, Chicharito, Welbeck, Valencia, Kagawa.
