Disgraceful scenes marred an FA Cup third round qualifying tie between Atherstone and Barrow on Saturday as home fans invaded the Sheepy Road pitch at half time.

Atherstone trailed 4-0 at the break when a small number of their support broke ranks and ran towards the Barrow support, which led to shocking scenes.

Barrow substitute Greg Mills, who was warming up on the pitch at the time, clashed with one fan after he was targeted, while it was reported by witnesses that an elderly supporter was left injured following the events.

"I am personally embarrassed about the scenes here at half-time," Atherstone chairman Rob Weale told BBC Radio Cumbria. "It was unacceptable, obviously we will be pursuing the perpetrators.

"We will work alongside the security officers, the referees and the police and those people responsible will feel the full force of the law. The situation was defused as quickly as possible, the police came into take control but once it has happened it has happened and I apologise to the Barrow fans."

Atherstone boss Ivor Green stated the scenes had ruined the tie, in which the second half was delayed by over ten minutes.

"It's wrecked it and it makes me feel sick," Green told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire. "The second half just fizzled out, both sides were affected by it."

The scoreline stayed the same as Barrow ran out 4-0 winners.
