Gerrard: Liverpool not aiming for title

Steven Gerrard has played down Liverpool's Premier League title chances - insisting that a top-four finish remains the priority.

Brendan Rodgers' side are second in the table, behind leaders Arsenal on goals scored, after winning five of their opening seven matches.

Such a promising start has raised the possibility of a serious challenge for a first league title since 1990.

But Liverpool and England captain Gerrard insists that the main focus is on a return to the Champions League, a competition Liverpool have not played in since December 2009.

The 33-year-old told Liverpool's website: "I'd never say never about our chances of winning the Premier League title. But if I'm being honest, that's not the aim. The aim is for a top-four place."

Gerrard will lead England into their final World Cup qualifier against Poland at Wembley on Tuesday night knowing that a victory will secure a place at next year's finals in Brazil.

Roy Hodgson's side were lifted by Friday's 4-1 win over Montenegro at Wembley, and Gerrard is optimistic.

He said: "The result [against Montenegro] will give us a huge lift and it's good for confidence going into the final game.

"But the message is that the job's half done. Poland are a very good team. They're going to come and do us no favours, like Montenegro, and try to make it really difficult for us.

"It's important that we perform to the same level as on Friday night."
