Hodgson puts faith in Man United duo

Frank Lampard has been dropped by Roy Hodgson as Manchester United duo Michael Carrick and Chris Smalling are called into the starting line-up for England's crunch World Cup qualifier against Poland.

Lampard started alongside Steven Gerrard in the centre of midfield in Friday's 4-1 win against Montenegro, but Hodgson has favoured Carrick in tonight's must-win encounter at Wembley.

With Kyle Walker ruled out through suspension after picking up a booking against Montenegro, Chris Smalling has been given the nod over United teammate Phil Jones at right back.

Tottenham's Andros Townsend has also shaken off injury fears to retain his place on the right wing, after scoring on his debut to help England on their way to victory on Friday.

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has to settle for a place on the bench again.

England will almost certainly head into the play-offs if they fail to take all three points against Poland, with Ukraine - a point behind Hodgson's side in second - facing Group H minnows San Marino, who have only ever won a single match in their history.
