Wenger admits Van Persie sale destabilised Arsenal
Arsene Wenger has revealed the sale of Robin van Persie to Manchester United last year caused 'unrest' at Arsenal and 'destabilised' the club during the previous campaign.
The Dutchman was sold for £24 million and won the Premier League title in his first season with United, but speaking at the club's AGM on Thursday, the Arsenal manager has admitted the sale of his former captain affected the side.
"We lost Van Persie, [it] created a lot of unrest and destabilised the team. But from November to May the team showed fantastic mental strength," Wenger said.
Arsenal salvaged fourth spot ahead of Tottenham on the final day of last season to reach the Champions League for the 16th year in a row.
Chief executive Ivan Gazidis meanwhile mocked Spurs over Gareth Bale, saying the winger "doesn't play for Tottenham, he now plays for one of our rivals".
