Leverkusen score 'ghost goal' through side netting

Bayer Leverkusen were given more than a helping hand in their 2-1 victory over Hoffenheim - after the referee awarded them a 'goal' that went through the side netting.

Leverkusen went 2-0 up in the 70th minute at the Rhein-Neckar Arena despite Stefan Kiessling's header going wide of the post.

The ball went through a hole in the side netting and dropped into the goal. The officials gave Leverkusen the goal to the shock of the Hoffenheim players.

Referee Felix Brych was inside the area, with television replays showing from his view it was not clear the ball had gone wide. However he might have had a hint when Kiessling initially wheeled away with his hands on his head after his narrow miss.

To rub salt into the wounds, ten minutes after the goal was awarded Hoffenheim missed a penalty with the ball hitting the post twice after it was saved.

Hoffenheim did pull one back through Sven Schipplock two minutes before the end, but could not conjure another.

In 1994, Bayern Munich were given a goal against Nurnberg after Thomas Helmers' header had been tipped around the post, with the match being replayed.
