Glen Johnson returns to the Liverpool starting line-up for Saturday's lunchtime game against Newcastle, having not featured since spraining his ankle against Manchester United in early September.

The 29-year-old has endured seven weeks of rehabilitation, keeping him out of the Liverpool side which has surged to joint-top in the Premier League as well as England's successful end to the World Cup qualifying campaign.

"I'm fighting to get fit and fighting to get a shirt on again," Johnson told the Liverpool website.

"All I can do is concentrate on working hard and doing well on the pitch. That's served me well over the last five years and I'm sure it will serve me well in the future."

Manager Brendan Rodgers added: "He's one of the best full-backs in the world, it's great to have him back."

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has made two changes to his Newcastle line-up, with French duo Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Hatem Ben-Arfa returning.

They replace skipper Fabricio Coloccini, out with a groin strain, and striker Papiss Cisse, who drops to the bench.
