Wayne Rooney has revealed he has not seen Sir Alex Ferguson since the former Manchester United manager retired from his post at Old Trafford.

Ferguson released his new autobiography on Tuesday, in which he stated Rooney had struggled to maintain his fitness during the final year of the Scot's tenure.

However Rooney, who gave an inspiring performance in United's 1-0 Champions League win over Real Sociedad on Wednesday, appeared to hit back at his former manager's comments by confirming he was relishing a return to form under David Moyes.

"I'm feeling fit, enjoying my football and hopefully I can score more goals and continue being successful," Rooney told Sky Sports. "The new coaching staff have come in and it's given me a new lease of life.

"I'm enjoying working with David Moyes and the coaching staff and there's a lot of players fighting for places.

"He's [Ferguson] got his own opinion. I haven't really said much about it all along and thankfully he's gone back and corrected the story that I put a transfer request in, he's gone back and proved that I haven't so I'm thankful to him for that.

"I haven't seen him since he retired. I'm working hard under David Moyes and the new training staff so that's the main thing from me.

"I'm looking forward to the future now."
