Manchester United manager David Moyes has defended winger Nani after he was booed off by a section of the home support in Saturday's 3-2 win over Stoke at Old Trafford.

United were trailing 2-1 when Moyes replaced Nani with Adnan Januzaj, and cheers for the teenage substitute gave way to jeers as the Portuguese forward made his way towards the dugout.

But Moyes, who awarded 26-year-old Nani a new five-year contract earlier this season, felt that was harsh and said he had played a pivotal part in Robin van Persie's equalising goal for United.

He said: "He is a regular for Portugal, so he is very talented. There were one or two decisions he might have made better, but he got us the [first] goal with a lovely ball.

"We have a lot of competition for places in the wide areas, incredible competition, and that is what we're looking for."
