Roma fans jailed after Spurs fans attack

Two hooligans identified in the attack on a group of Tottenham Hotspur fans in Rome last November have been sentenced to terms of around five years.

Francesco Ianari will serve four years and five months, while Mauro Pinnelli has been convicted to five years and six months for what prosecutors branded a "premeditated attack of urban warfare" at the Drunken Ship pub in the city.

A large number of Spurs fans had congregated in the pub, located in the Campo dei Fiori part of the city, on the eve of their side's Europa League clash with Lazio on Nov. 22 last year. They were attacked by a group of masked troublemakers, reported to belong to radical 'ultra' groups of both Lazio and city rivals Roma.

The Gazzetta dello Sport claims it was actually a group of Roma fans who instigated the attack, calling their rival group to join forces in attacking the pub, causing an estimated 18,000 euros' worth of damage and leaving 13 Spurs fans injured.

The two convicted individuals, who were identified and arrested only days after the attack, are known Roma ultras. Smoke bombs and gas was used by the aggressors, who were also armed with knives, batons and similar weapons in the planned assault.

One Spurs fan - Ashley Mills - spent over a fortnight in the Sam Camillo hospital receiving treatment for stab wounds.

Lazio staged two Europa League matches behind closed doors last season due to the repeated misbehaviour of their fans while a similar sanction for the current campaign was alleviated earlier this month by UEFA. Instead, only the Curva Nord will be closed for their clash with Apollon Limassol next week.
