Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has been discharged from hospital after missing Saturday's 2-0 Premier League defeat at Arsenal with a facial infection.

The right-back was forced to withdraw from the line-up in the build-up to kick-off after being taken ill. Johnson complained of severe pain on the right side of his face and jaw, and was taken to a London hospital for tests.

A statement on Liverpool's official website read: "The club's medical staff now expect the Reds' No.2 to recover in time to be in contention for Liverpool's next match, at home to Fulham in the Premier League next weekend."

Johnson had only recently returned to action after missing five matches with an ankle sprain suffered during the 1-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United on September 1.

John Flanagan was drafted in to replace him at The Emirates on Saturday, making his first league appearance since April 2012.
