Moyes bemoans 'missed opportunity'

David Moyes believes Marouane Fellaini was unlucky to be sent off during Manchester United's Champions League draw with Real Sociedad on Tuesday.

Moyes cut a frustrated figure after seeing his side waste several chances to take all three points in San Sebastian and further extend their lead at the top of Group A.

Robin van Persie missed a second-half penalty and also hit the woodwork, while Javier Hernandez could only blast over from five yards out as United fizzled out at the Estadio Anoeta.

A vexing night for the away side was completed in the final minute when Fellaini received his marching orders after picking up a second yellow card - although Moyes believes the decision to dismiss his midfielder was one of a number of strange calls made on the night.

"It was the totting up [of tackles] that got him [Fellaini] sent off but I thought it was harsh," Moyes told ITV. "I thought there were some strange decisions all night. The crowd whistled an awful lot for things tonight.

"We had enough chances to win it, We controlled it for most of the game. It was there to take, to get into a strong position or even get clear in the group and we should have taken three points."

Ryan Giggs, who made his 950th appearance for United on the night, echoed his manager's thoughts but is confident that they can comfortably advance to the last 16.

"Tonight we controlled the game, we had two or three great chances and probably should have won it," Giggs said. "We are happy with the performance, but disappointed we didn't get the win.

"If you get a point away from home and win your home games you go through and we are on track to do that. We will try and qualify but we have two tough games to come. We have played Shakhtar and Leverkusen so we know what they are all about and we are confident we can go through."
