Eriksson hacked while England boss

Sven-Goran Eriksson's phone was hacked by the News of the World throughout his time as England manager, the Old Bailey heard on Wednesday.

Eriksson, who coached England between 2001 and 2006 and helped them to reach the quarter-finals of the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, was the subject of several high-profile stories at the former tabloid newspaper.

The court heard that Eriksson's phone was hacked the day before England began their 2006 World Cup campaign and also in the days leading up to newspaper stories in which he was duped by an undercover reporter acting as a prospective Premier League football club owner.

Eriksson's phone number was also found in the notebooks of private investigator Glenn Mulcaire from May 2002 and June 2004. Prosecutors also confirmed to the jury that recordings of two voicemail messages, one from Everton owner Bill Kenwright and one from an Italian footballer, were found at Mulcaire's address.

The trial is taking place as part of a wider investigation into phone hacking which saw the News of the World shut down in 2011 after it emerged that the newspaper had tapped into the phones of dozens of public figures.

Eriksson has been in the news this week following the release of his autobiography and an interview with the BBC in which he claims that England will not win the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
