Record-breaker Jermain Defoe has been left out of Tottenham's starting XI to face Newcastle at White Hart Lane this afternoon.

Defoe became the club's all-time leading scorer in European competition in midweek, but is replaced by Roberto Soldado in the starting line-up.

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris does not even feature as a substitute, following his concussion against Everton last Sunday. Brad Friedel continues in his place.

Tottenham, via their official Twitter account, confirmed that Lloris had been left out on medical advice.

Newcastle continue with the same starting XI that defeated Chelsea last time out, with goalscorers Yohann Gouffran and Loic Remy both included.
