Manchester United are waiting to find out how long Phil Jones will be sidelined for amid fears he will be ruled out of their next two games.

The versatile 21-year-old suffered a groin injury in England's 2-0 defeat to Chile on Friday and missed their 1-0 loss to Germany on Tuesday.

And reports suggest he could be forced to miss the trips to Cardiff and Bayer Leverkusen, which would leave manager David Moyes short of fit central midfielders.

Jones and Michael Carrick were paired in the centre of the pitch in the 1-0 win against Arsenal, but the 32-year-old has been ruled out for up to six weeks with an achilles injury.

And summer signing Marouane Fellaini is suspended for the Leverkusen game after he was sent off in United's last Champions League match, the 0-0 draw away at Real Sociedad.

Darren Fletcher, who has not made a first-team appearance since December 2012, has returned to action with United's reserves team and is registered to play in the Champions League, but it remains to be seen when he will be deemed ready to make his comeback.

So apart from Tom Cleverley, manager Moyes could only have two other central midfielders available to face Leverkusen - Ryan Giggs, who turns 40 later that week, and Anderson, who has not started a game since September's home defeat to West Brom.
