Medel avoids FA punishment over Fellaini 'slap'

Cardiff midfielder Gary Medel has escaped disciplinary action from the FA, despite appearing to raise his hands towards Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini during Sunday's 2-2 draw.

Referee Neil Swarbrick failed to see the incident at the Cardiff City Stadium, meaning it was reviewed by the FA's panel of former referees.

The panel, however, decided on Monday that the incident was not worthy of a red card so no action is to be taken.

Sunday's clash caused further controversy when Swarbrick only showed a yellow card to Wayne Rooney, despite a lunge on Jordan Mutch. Rooney has hit back at criticism from Graeme Souness over the incident, and also quipped that Medel gave Fellaini a "left hook".

Elsewhere, referee Kevin Friend has not been given a match for the next two rounds of Premier League games after he sent off Wes Brown during Sunderland's 2-0 defeat to Stoke City.

Sunderland have confirmed that they will appeal against the red card - given to Brown despite the defender appearing to win the ball following a challenge on Charlie Adam. Crystal Palace have also appealed Yannick Bolasie's sending off against Hull. The midfielder was given his marching orders for a late tackle on Jake Livermore in Palace's 1-0 win at the KC Stadium on Saturday.
