Burton recall 50-year-old Poole

Burton Albion have been forced to name 50-year-old Kevin Poole on the bench for their League 2 match with Mansfield on Tuesday.

Poole, the goalkeeping coach at the Pirelli Stadium, will provide cover for No. 1 Dean Lyness after on-loan stopper Jordan Pickford was recalled by Sunderland.

"Obviously that is not something we want to do long term," Burton manager Gary Rowett told BBC Radio Derby.

"I said to Pooley at the start of the season that if we have to do it for one game, if it saves us wasting money on a loan keeper for a month, then it makes sense for me to do it.

"If we had brought someone in for a month before the game on Saturday [against Bristol Rovers] we would have found mid-window, when we can't bring anyone in, that we would have lost someone to their parent club and we would have been left without a keeper again."

Poole, who turned 50 in July, was the Football League's oldest registered player when he retired at at the end of the 2011-12 season, aged 48.

He played in the top flight for boyhood club Aston Villa between 1984 and 1987 before going on to make 163 appearances for Leicester City, including three seasons in the Premier League. He has also notably played for Birmingham City, Bolton Wanderers and Middlesbrough.
