But Barcelona vice-president Josep Bartmoeu has insisted they have not approached the Argentina international, who is a close friend of Lionel Messi, and are not planning to recruit him.

"No, we have had no contact with him," he told Mundo Deportivo. "I can say that the story is not true."

Aguero, who joined City in 2011 and is their 16-goal top scorer this season, has also been linked with Real Madrid.

But City manager Manuel Pellegrini stated on Sunday that he was unaware of any contact between the clubs and believes that he 25-year-old wants to stay at the Etihad Stadium.

He said: "I don't know anything about that. I don't think Sergio wants to leave. That is not a problem for us. I don't believe in that."
