Manchester United striker Robin Van Persie has been ruled out for a month with a thigh strain.

United manager David Moyes, whose side have lost their last two Premier League games, confirmed that the Netherlands international would be sidelined.

He said van Persie had suffered the injury while taking the corner that led to Phil Jones' midweek Champions League winner against Shakhtar Donetsk at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old came on in the 63rd minute against Shakhtar, before taking the corner which led to the goal. However, van Persie was not substituted after picking up the injury and continued for the remaining 26 minutes.

The Dutchman has scored seven goals in 11 Premier League appearances for United this season.

"Robin Van Persie is out for a month," Moyes said. "He picked up a thigh strain in taking a corner kick which led to the goal.

Moyes said it was "a big blow," adding: "It is unfortunate, because I think if you look at our record with Wayne Rooney and Robin in the team it is actually very good, and we have not had them for quite a period recently.

"Marouane Fellaini has a bit of a back injury. Michael Carrick is missing, and Robin is going to miss four weeks with a thigh strain. That is a big blow to us."

The United boss, who was without Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Chris Smalling for the Shakhtar game, said: "I have no doubt it will get better. I am sure we have plenty of players who can cover it and we don't miss them too much."
