Wilshere could face action after gesture

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere could face action from the FA after he made a crude gesture at Manchester City fans during his side's 6-3 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

Television cameras captured the England international appearing to raise a finger towards the crowd. And English football's governing body could elect to take action once they have received referee Martin Atkinson's official match report.

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger accepted that Wilshere could be punished, saying: "I didn't see that. I don't know if he did it. If he did it and is banned, we will have to accept it."

But he brushed off an angry exchange between defender Per Mertesacker and midfielder Mesut Ozil at the end of the game, when Mertesacker appeared to berate his Germany international colleague for not applauding the travelling supporters.

"That is the Germans, they will sort that out between themselves," Wenger said. "Don't worry."

Despite the final scoreline at the Etihad, Wenger said he did not believe City were the best team Arsenal had faced so far this season.

"They are one of the teams to beat, but not more than any of the other ones we have played until now," he added. "We have played Everton, who were as good as City, and Southampton, who were as good as City."
