Mesut Ozil has issued an apology to the Arsenal fans after he decided not to join the team in applauding the travelling support following their 6-3 loss to Manchester City.

The club's £42.5 million record signing was given a ticking off by fellow German Per Mertesacker at the final whistle, and Ozil this evening has taken to his Facebook page to say sorry to the fans.

He posted: "Sorry I didn't thank the fans at the end of the game!

"You have been brilliant to me and I know you had travelled a long way and spent your money to support us. I was upset with the result and know I should have come to you to say 'thank you' and I know it is a big Arsenal tradition win, lose or draw."

Arsenal saw their gap at the top of the Premier League reduced to two points after Chelsea defeated Crystal Palace, and the win for City sees them just three points off the Gunners, who on a day lost Laurent Koscielny to injury and could see Jack Wilshere potentially facing punishment after being caught by television cameras apparently making a crude gesture towards the City fans.
