Spurs give Sherwood chance to impress

Tim Sherwood has been given the chance to impress at Tottenham following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas by being placed in temporary charge.

Former Spurs midfielder Sherwood, 44, is currently employed as the club's technical co-ordinator, overseeing the under-21 development squad and youth set-up, and was part of the coaching staff under former manager Harry Redknapp.

A report in the Guardian states that he was under consideration for the role of technical director in the summer before the appointment of Franco Baldini, but due to the impression he has made within the club, and notably on chairman Daniel Levy, there is a feeling he could steady the ship in the short-term.

Sherwood will be in charge for the Capital One Cup quarter-final against West Ham on Wednesday night, when he will be assisted by Les Ferdinand and Chris Ramsey. Steffen Freund and Tony Parks will also remain part of the coaching staff.

Meanwhile, speaking to the Sun, Queens Park Rangers manager Redknapp, who was in charge at White Hart Lane between 2008 and 2012, has backed Sherwood to take on the role

"Tim should get the job permanently and work alongside Les Ferdinand," he is quoted as saying.

"Together, they are old-school Spurs and would do a tremendous job. I brought them both back to the club when I was there because they understand the place.

"They are great coaches and don't forget Tim was captain of Blackburn when they won the Premier League in 1995.

"Why shouldn't he get the job - even though being English will probably go against him."

Former England manager Fabio Capello has also been mentioned as a possible longer-term appointment, although Guus Hiddink and Michael Laudrup were ruled out of the running on Monday.

Meanwhile, Glenn Hoddle, a former player and manager at the club is understood to be interested in the position, according to the BBC.

Hoddle, 56, has not managed since leaving Wolves in 2006 but remains involved in the game and has turned down opportunities of work since then.
