There's no money, West Brom warn Clarke's successor

Steve Clarke's successor as West Bromwich Albion manager will not be given a transfer kitty for the January transfer window, the club has confirmed.

Chairman Jeremy Peace approved the summer signings of Stephane Sessegnon and Victor Anichebe for a combined fee of almost £12 million, as well as a £2m loan fee for Manchester City striker Scott Sinclair and the £35,000-a-week wages of free transfer Nicolas Anelka.

West Brom will have to rely on loan signings to consolidate their squad in January, while fringe players such as Graham Dorrans and Markus Rosenberg expected to leave in order to trim the squad.

"We exhausted all available resources during the summer window to ensure the squad is as competitive as possible for the season ahead," Richard Garlick, the club's sporting and technical director, told the Telegraph.

"We've traditionally used the January window for topping up the squad due to injuries or unforeseen circumstances and we'll be looking to do that via the loan market or short-term deals.

"January will also be a time to reassess the positions of players who may not get regular game time and become surplus to requirements.

"We have a lot of work to do now to ensure we are ready, if necessary, to act in January and we're already making plans for the next summer window."

Joint assistant head coach Keith Downing and goalkeeping coach Dean Kiely are set to take charge for this weekend's game against Hull City.
