Mackay refuses to quit as Cardiff boss

Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay admits that criticism from club owner Vincent Tan came as a surprise, but insists he has no intention of resigning.

Tan said he was "extremely upset" with Mackay after the manager went public with his plans to push for more signings in January, the latest flashpoint in the deteriorating relationship between the chairman and the manager.

Mackay has led Cardiff to 15th place as they approach the midpoint of their first season in the Premier League, with Saturday's 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion prompting the sacking of Steve Clarke.

After the match Mackay said he was on the lookout for "a defender, a midfielder and an attacking player" to bolster his squad in their bid to stave off relegation, leading to Tan's angry response and fuelling speculation about the Scot's future.

"I will not resign from my post," Mackay told BBC Wales. "I was surprised obviously, but at the same time my job doesn't change.

"It's a job only three-quarters done as far as I'm concerned - making Cardiff a sustainable Premier League team.

"I have a great group of players who are competing at this level and enjoying this level. The fans are enjoying being at this level and my duty is to make sure we continue to do that.

"It would be wrong of me to walk away from a job because the owner doesn't want to give me more money in January."
