King insists his body can withstand World Cup test

Ledley King is confident that he will be able to play in each of England's fixtures at the World Cup, despite the chronic knee injury that prevents him training more than twice a week.

After Rio Ferdinand was ruled out of the World Cup by injury, King is likely to be Fabio Capello's first-choice partner for John Terry at the heart of England's defence.

Although King's quality is not in question, he was used only sparingly by Tottenham last season - starting half of their Premier League fixtures - and there are doubts about whether his body can withstand the rigours of a series of fixtures over a short period.

The centre-back has shrugged off suggestions that he will be unable to play a full part in England's campaign, however. "I've shown this season I can play games in quick succession," he said. "Monday to Saturday shouldn't be a problem.

"I like to believe [I can play a full part]. The medical team, the facilities are second to none. I believe with the right help and support I can do that."

King conceded that it will be "difficult" for him to forge a partnership with Terry ahead of the World Cup, but he remains confident that both players have the experience to form a formidable duo.

"I've known John for a long time. He's a great communicator on the pitch and that's what you need," he said. "It is difficult. We're not going to have much time regardless of me training once or twice a week. But I am an experienced player and have played for long enough to know my position.

"I will keep an eye on training - especially for set-pieces - and I am sure I will know where to be on the pitch. Communication is key and, if that's good, we have a good chance."
