Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay has allegedly been sent an email by the club's owner Vincent Tan, telling him to resign or he will be sacked.

In the email, which is being reported by the BBC as sent to the Bluebirds' manager on Monday evening, Tan criticised 41-year-old Mackay on a range of subjects, from signings, managing transfer budgets, results and the team's playing style.

The Malaysian billionaire also questioned the Scot's record as a manager.

The relationship between Tan and Mackay hit its lowest point on Saturday when, in a statement released through CEO Simon Lim, Tan was said to be "extremely upset" after Mackay had told the press he hoped to buy new players in the January transfer window.

The club broke their transfer record three times in the summer, signing striker Andreas Cornelius for £7.5 million, defender Steven Caulker for £8m and then midfielder Gary Medel for £11m.

The overspending, Tan revealed in the statement, was the reason behind head of recruitment Iain Moody being sacked in October.
