Sources: Liverpool keen on 'Egyptian Messi' Salah

Liverpool are considering a January move for Basel winger Mohamed Salah, sources have told ESPN.

The 21-year-old, who has been dubbed 'the Egyptian Lionel Messi', has attracted attention across Europe after impressing for his club in the Champions League.

Manager Brendan Rodgers is looking to strengthen his squad when the transfer window opens next month, with Salah one of his targets.

Egypt international Salah has been linked with Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United in recent months, with reports suggesting that Basel would sell him for around £15 million.

Salah's prospects of a move to Anfield appeared to be talked up this week by Mohamed Zika, a former team-mate at Egyptian club Al Mokawloon.

Zika was quoted as telling Egyptian TV that Salah was all but certain to join Liverpool in January.

In a video translation on KingFut.com, he said: "Yes, I am 99% sure this will happen. He makes us and all of Egypt proud. Everybody talks about Mohamed Salah now - and aside from that he's my friend. I'm very happy for him."

Salah struck the equaliser when Basel earned a 2-1 win at Chelsea in the Champions League on September 18 and then got the only goal in a 1-0 victory at home to the Blues on November 26.

However, the Swiss champions failed to make it through the group and dropped into the Europa League, in which they will play Maccabi Tel Aviv over two legs in February.
