Manchester United have reportedly been told to stump up £40 million if they want to sign Marco Reus from Borussia Dortmund.

Reus' contract contained a £29.4 million buy-out clause however it is believed the situation changed after Bayern Munich triggered a similar clause in Mario Gotze's contract to snatch him from Dortmund last summer.

And United will now have to smash their transfer record - the £30.75 million they paid to Tottenham for Dimitar Berbatov in 2008 - if they wish to take Reus to Old Trafford.

David Moyes remains keen to strengthen his midfield, though the United manager is also on the lookout for attacking players as well as a left-back and a centre-back with uncertainty surrounding the futures of Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand.
