Tottenham are hoping to pip Newcastle to the loan signing of Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott, according to the Telegraph.

In talks after City's New Year's Day victory at Swansea, Lescott was told he can leave the club by manager Manuel Pellegrini. The 31-year-old signed from Everton for £22 million in August 2009, but has made just 13 appearances this season.

Spurs are looking to tie up a six-month loan deal for Lescott after a spate of injuries left their backline ravaged.

Turkish side Besiktas are also hoping to lure him to Istanbul with French club Monaco expressing an interest, however it is believed Lescott would prefer to stay in the Premier League.

Lescott and his representatives will hold talks with both Spurs and Newcastle this week. Alan Pardew is keen to bolster his defence with Fabricio Coloccini ruled out for up to six weeks with a knee injury.
