Manchester City are preparing to break the bank for Southampton left-back Luke Shaw and are considering a £30 million bid for the youngster, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

Shaw is a highly rated prospect at St Mary's and has recently attracted the interest of Chelsea, who regard the 18-year-old as a long-term replacement for Ashley Cole.

However, according to the newspaper City have indicated to Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese they will pay a world-record fee for the full-back in order to beat their rivals to his signature.

Danny Alves is currently the most expensive full-back in world football following his £29.5m move to Barcelona in 2008.

Shaw recently confirmed he was happy at Southampton and had no intentions to leave the club during the January transfer window.
