Newcastle United have confirmed Jonas Gutierrez has joined Norwich on loan for the remainder of the current season.

In his press conference ahead of their FA Cup third round replay with Fulham, Canaries boss Chris Hughton confirmed there had been interest in Gutierrez but denied a deal had been agreed between the two clubs.

However, the Magpies revealed the news on their official website on Monday and indicated the Argentina international is set to stay in Norfolk until June 30. He joins former boss Hughton at Carrow Road with the club sitting two points above the Premier League relegation zone.

Gutierrez, 30, posted Twitter messages bidding farewell to Newcastle supporters over the weekend, and thanked the St James' Park faithful for their support..

He wrote: "It was an honour and a pleasure to play with the Newcastle shirt and to have the support of the Geordies.

"Thanks for the messages. I enjoyed my five years at the club, I hope the club finish the highest this season and the best to my teammates."

Gutierrez was a key player for Hughton, who was in charge of Newcastle between June 2009 and December 2010, as he led the Magpies back into the top flight.

He joined Newcastle from Real Mallorca in 2008, and has made 195 appearances and scored 11 goals but has figured only twice this season.
