Rooney to be shared into Moyes' transfer plans

Wayne Rooney is to be shared into David Moyes' transfer plans for Manchester United as the club look to convince their striker to stay at the club.

Rooney had wanted to know who would be signing for the club when Sir Alex Ferguson was manager, but was told in no uncertain terms that this would not be happening. However, it appears Moyes is more open to the idea, which is being floated - alongside Rooney being made club captain - as part of negotiations on a new deal worth £300,000 a week, according to the Sun.

Ferguson wrote in his recent autobiography about Rooney's desire to know more about the club's transfer plans. "I told him it was his job to play," writes Ferguson. "My job was to pick the correct teams."

Moyes made his first move of the winter transfer window - and only his second major deal as United manager - by completing the signing of Juan Mata for a club record fee of £37.1 million on Saturday.

Securing the services of Rooney beyond the end of next season, when his current contract expires, is next on Moyes' agenda especially given the forward's form this season; he has scored nine league goals and provided a league-high nine assists.

The completion of the Mata deal was achieved despite Chelsea including a clause in the player's contract that he could leave for £37.1m for any club except United. However, the Daily Mail reports that Mata's advisors were instructed by United last summer to get the clause removed in order to facilitate a January transfer.

The report also reveals negotiations between Chelsea and United were conducted entirely in writing so that Stamford Bridge powerbrokers could not move the conversation towards a deal for Rooney, who they tried to sign last summer.
