Juan Mata relishing Wayne Rooney link-up

David Moyes has issued a stark warning to his underperforming Manchester United squad that if they don't shape up they will be shipped out.

Following the £37.1 million capture of Juan Mata, who is expected to make his debut against Cardiff tonight, Moyes is aiming to bring in several more top-class signings with United enduring a season to forget. The club sit seventh in the Premier League, 14 points off leaders Arsenal, and have been knocked out of both domestic cups, though face a Champions League last-16 tie against Olympiakos next month.

The Times report that United could possibly make another acquisition before the close of the transfer window on Friday, though Moyes admitted he will do most of his transfer dealing in the summer.

Wayne Rooney is also close to agreeing a new £300,000-a-week extension to his contract, which runs out at the end of next season, with a deal possibly being signed in the next few days. Rooney has a slight chance of featuring against Cardiff, having missed six of United's last seven games with an adductor injury.

Captain Nemanja Vidic and vice-captain Patrice Evra - whose contracts expire in June, could be among those heading for a summer exit, according to the Times. Antonio Valencia, Javier Hernandez, Rio Ferdinand, Alexander Buttner, Nani, Ashley Young and Shinji Kagawa are also under scrutiny.

"I am not going to accept it," Moyes said of United's season. "I'm disappointed that we're not in a much stronger position. I'm disappointed with how we have played. I will ultimately take the rap for that, but what I will do is make it right. I'm going to get better players in. There will be more.

"I don't think there will be more in January, but it will change. I have said many times that I have given every player here the opportunity to play and show what they can do. We have nearly done that now."

Moyes remains intent on signing a new left-back and at least one central midfielder, with the summer a more likely timeframe for new arrivals. Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala and Southampton left-back Luke Shaw have been tracked, while Juventus midfield pair Arturo Vidal and Paul Pogba are also on Moyes' radar. United remain keen on Borrusia Dortmund duo Ilkay Gundogan and Marco Reus, as well as Bayern Munich's Toni Kroos - who is struggling to agree terms on a new contract. Edinson Cavani, the Paris Saint-Germain striker, is another in the frame, with Moyes saying that "there will be more players like Juan in the future".

Anderson has already been sent on loan to Fiorentina, with his No.8 shirt being handed to Mata, while Wilfried Zaha and Fabio da Silva are joining Cardiff City, on respective loan and permanent deals.

"A couple of new signings isn't all that's needed," Moyes said. "There's a bigger job to be done, but you have to start somewhere. "
