Arsenal miss opportunity

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has suffered a setback as he bids to make a comeback from injury, manager Arsene Wenger has revealed.

Ramsey, 23, returned to full training on Monday after sustaining a thigh problem during the 3-1 win at West Ham on December 26.

The Wales international was tipped to be involved in the 2-2 draw at Southampton on Tuesday, but was left out of the Gunners squad altogether.

And Wenger confirmed the news after the game that Ramsey will be sidelined for an extended period after aggravating the same injury, with some reports suggesting he could be out for around four to six weeks.

"Ramsey is out for longer than we expected," Wenger said. "He had a little setback in training, it's the same muscle."

It is a huge blow for Wenger who watched on at St Mary's as his side produced a lacklustre display and dropped two Premier League points in the process.

Ramsey's injury could force Wenger back into the transfer market before Friday's 11pm deadline, but the Frenchman was very coy when asked if anyone would be joining the Gunners.

"I hope we have something to tell you," he added.

Manchester City can leapfrog Arsenal at the top of the table with victory against Tottenham on Wednesday.

Ramsey was in superb form for the first half of the season before picking up his injury, scoring 13 goals for the Gunners in all competitions.
