Everton striker Romelu Lukaku's ankle injury will keep him out for "weeks rather than months", manager Roberto Martinez has said.

Lukaku, 20, was taken off during Tuesday's 4-0 Premier League defeat at Liverpool after a collision with team-mate Gareth Barry as they tried unsuccessfully to stop Steven Gerrard opening the scoring.

There were initial fears Lukaku had damaged ankle ligaments and would be out for a lengthy spell. But a scan has shown the injury is not as bad as first thought, and Martinez is hopeful that Lukaku will not be out for too long.

Martinez told Everton's official website: "There is no ligament damage and the injury is not as bad as we first thought. It will be a case of weeks rather than months."

Lukaku has scored nine times in 20 appearances for Everton since arriving from Chelsea on a season's loan on September 2.
