Premier League clubs spend record £760m

January transfer spending in the Premier League eclipsed last year's total by £10 million and has broken the top-flight record for a season by £90m.

Accountants Deloitte reported that Premier League clubs have now spent £760m in total this season, £90m more than the previous record set in 2008-09. This is despite only one side in the top 10 making a significant outlay on deadline day, with Chelsea spending £12m on Kurt Zouma.

Previous club record buys such as Mesut Ozil by Arsenal and Juan Mata by Manchester United kept overall seasonal spending high, even though deadline day spending reached just £35m, significantly down on January 2011's deadline day total of an incredible £225m.

"Spending has again been driven by a minority of clubs, with just two accounting for more than 60% of the league's total spending," said Dan Jones of Deloitte.

"Around half of Premier League clubs chose not to spend this month.

"It is important to put this in context; the transfer spending is supported by the record level of revenues of Premier League clubs, driven primarily by new broadcast agreements. This gives Premier League clubs the ability to continue to invest significantly in their playing talent."

Even with what appeared to be a low-key end to the window, the Premier League dwarfed all other European leagues in terms of total spend in January, with France, Italy and Germany combined spending £117m.
